HIGHLIGHTS
  • To reduce the pollution of river Ganga by means of sewage interception & diversion, sewage treatment plant, electric crematoria, low-cost sanitation & riverfront development

  • 110 schemes completed under Phase-I at a cost of Rs. 186.13 crore covering 15 Class-I towns

  • Phase-II programme already taken up covering 26 towns and two outfall channels at an estimated cost of Rs. 222.62 crore for 175 schemes. Rs. 89 crore already spent
 
List of Projects implemented under Ganga Action Plan Sector during the last five year
  • Provision of preventive measures to cover a target population of about 2 million slum-dwellers throughout KMA
  • Use of local HHWs working at the slum level to promote hygiene
  • Maximum cost efficiency by utilizing the existing resources
  • Community participation by engaging local people in planning, implementation and monitoring of the health programmes, etc.

The projects under phase - 1 of the Ganga Action Plan are almost complete. A summarized account of the number of projects in towns both within and outside Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) is furnished below:

Some particulars of some of the major GAP schemes are noted below :
 
GAP schemes in KMC area
Location: South Suburban, Garden Reach and Cossipore-Chitpur.
Objective: To intercept the sewage and then divert the same to STP for treatment and then discharging into the River Hooghly. For the purpose, 16 I & D schemes with three main lifting stations and 3 STPs, one each of activated sludge process, oxidation pond method and trickling filter method, have been provided under the project.
 
GAP schemes in HMC area
Location: South and south west parts of Howrah.
Objective: To intercept the sewage and then divert the same to STP for treatment and then discharging into the River Hooghly. For the purpose, 2 I & D schemes with two main lifting stations and 1 STP using trickling filter method, have been provided under the project.
 
GAP schemes in Bally municipal area
Location: Different areas within Bally municipality with STP at Kona in West Howrah.
Objective: To intercept the sewage and then divert the same to STP for treatment and then discharging into the River Hooghly. For the purpose, 3 I & D schemes with one main lifting station and 1 STP using oxidation pond method, have been provided under the project.
 
GAP schemes in Titagarh Municipality
Location: Different areas within the municipality with a STP at Bandipur.
Objective: To intercept the sewage and then divert the same to STP for treatment and then discharging into the River Hooghly. For the purpose, 4 I & D schemes with one main lifting station and 1 STP have been provided under the project.
 
GAP schemes in Bhatpara Municipality
Location: Different areas within the municipality with STPs at Madrail and Jagaddal.
Objective: To intercept the sewage and then divert the same to STP for treatment and then discharging into the River Hooghly. For the purpose, 6 I & D schemes with three main lifting stations and 2 STPs, one each of activated sludge process and oxidation pond method, have been provided under the project.
 
GAP schemes in Chandannagar Municipality
Location: Different areas within the municipality with a STP at Khalisani.
Objective: To intercept the sewage and then divert the same to STP for treatment and then discharging into the River Hooghly. For the purpose, 3 I & D schemes with one main lifting station and 1 STP have been provided under the project.
 
GAP schemes in Serampore Municipality
Location: Different areas within the municipality with a STP at Jannagar Road.
Objective: To intercept the sewage and then divert the same to STP for treatment and then discharging into the River Hooghly. For the purpose, 3 I & D schemes with one main lifting station and 1 STP with trickling filter method, have been provided under the project.
